Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Where can I get help with printing?

A. see below

Q. Why don't you use accessibility keys?

A. By defining accessibility keys I could accidentally interfere with your preferred option.

Q. Why can't I use the index to jump to the exact square on a page?

A. Other than by using an extra viewing software package, the only way to do that would be to cut each map into its constituent squares. This would prevent you being able to print the whole map.

Q. Why is the place I am looking for not in the index?

A. Over 90% of the places in the Administrative County of London are included in the index. Your street may be too small or it may have subsequently changed name. Try my list of London Street name changes or my eBook, London Streets lost to the Blitz

About this edition

The maps were scanned at 600 dpi then squared up and stitched together using Adobe Photoshop. GlobalSCAPE CuteMAP (now no longer available) was used to create the next/previous links. The pages were mostly hand coded then checked and adjusted using Dreamweaver and KompoZer.

The HTML code has been comprehensively tested to ensure maximum machine and platform compatibility. Every page has been checked by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Markup Validation Service. W3C produce the International Standards for HTML and I stick rigidly to them. Not all browsers do, Internet Explorer used to be the worst culprit. Opera and Brave, for example, also sometimes produce odd changes to planned/expected behaviour. However, this map works with all mainstream browsers without the need for any additional software.

The Street Index was created using a great deal of time, tedium and ingenuity. Some typographical and factual errors were detected in the original and removed, a few more have been pointed out by users. These have been corrected or are described. Please share any mistakes that you find with me so that I can tell other users. You can check the index with scans of the original.

Printing

Under the terms of the licence you may print any of the maps or other pages for personal use. Please do not try to print the page you want from your browser whilst viewing it. This works for the text pages, but not the maps or other scanned images.

All of the maps and index page scans are jpeg (.jpg) files, because this is the most common picture format and can be viewed with, and printed from, any graphics program.

All the files are named exactly what you would expect them to be called e.g. the first sectional map (Plate_1.htm) is called Plate_1.jpg and Index page 22 is called Index22.jpg

Find the file you want to print and then open it with your favourite graphics program.

Every version of Windows includes a program that will re-size a map and print it close to life-size on A4 paper.
