This map is dedicated to Emily J Boswell whose signature appears on the title page.

Presumably the first owner, in August 1898, she kept it in very good condition.

The only Emily J Boswell I can find in the 1901 census fits perfectly as a potential owner of this book, but this is pure conjecture.

Emily Jemima Boswell née Smith, widow of Henry Bruce Boswell, 13 years her senior, a Bombay Civil Servant. Henry died in early 1897 and she is living with her 91-year-old father, a clergyman, in Brighton.

Perhaps she bought the Atlas to look up some of the places she and Henry had visited or it was a present from her nieces, Dorothy and Rosalind.
